WEBELOS TO BOY SCOUT CROSSOVERThe procedure for the Webelos Scouts crossing over from the Cub Scout Pack to the Boy Scout Troop can be fun, and a bit intimidating at the same time. Without proper advance preparation, the Webelos Scouts as well as their leaders may not be fully aware of the changes that will take place when "moving up". Good exposure and cooperation between the two units is essential to a smooth transition. While the Webelos 2 den is preparing to make the big jump into Boy Scouts, the troop members should be preparing as well. For the entire year preceeding crossover, the Webelos dens should be invited to set up with the troop at all campouts and Camporees. Webelos Den / Scout Troop campouts should show Webelos Scouts and their parents what to expect when they move into the troop. The troop should cook and camp by patrol, and use skills that the Webelos Scouts can participate in.
Select Boy Scouts should serve as Den Chiefs for each Webelos Scout Den and Cub Scout Den.Beginning in November of the year preceeding Crossover, the Webelos Den should be invited and encouraged to attend actual troop meetings, remaining seperate, but allowed to participate in activities and become acclimated to the procedures of the troop meetings. The Scouts in the troop should be able to help instruct the Webelos on the necessary requirements in order to obtain their Arrow of Light award.
Troop Leaders should work with the Webelos Den Leaders to encourage them to plan to move into the troop with their Webelos Scouts and to serve either as Committee Members or Assistant Scoutmasters. Provide each Webelos Scout with a copy of the troop's activities for the upcoming year.
Conduct a Scoutmasters Conference with the Webelos. This conference should cover the meaning of the Scout Oath and Law, the advancement program, troop camping, the patrol method and summer camp.
At this time provide Boy Scout Applications and encourage the Webelos and Adult leaders to fill them out (This is a requirement for Arrow of Light).Work with the Cubmaster in planning a meaningful crossover ceremony at the Pack's Blue and Gold Banquet. Coordinate the Ceremony and arrange for each Webelos Scout to recieved a troop neckerchief along with his Arrow of Light Award. Troop Order of the Arrow members may assist in the ceremony.
Boy Scout Handbooks and Shoulder Tabs will be presented to the new crossover scouts.
Members of the Scout Troop should never forget that the younger boys are always looking up to them. Scouting is a family, and just like little brothers, the younger boys, no matter how much younger, are always very impressed when an older boy shows them not only guidance and leadership, but also friendship. Remember how excited you were when an older boy scout talked to you and showed you a little respect? It is now your turn to do this for the younger scouts. Be a friend and work together. You may be surprised how smoothly the program will run if everyone works together.
